FRANCISCAN LODGE
YOUR HOME ON THE ROAD
Auro Cattaneo 1913-1975
Nellie Cattaneo 1917-2002
Auro Cattaneo was born in Valnegra, Bergamo, Lambardia, Italy to Angel and Marietta Cattaneo in 1913 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1921 according to the 1930 census
where they settled in Gallup,
New Mexico.

In 1937, Auro Cattaneo was
contracted by R. E. Griffith to do
some stone and brickwork at
The Hotel El Rancho in Gallup,
New Mexico.
At the same time, his future
wife Nellie was working at
Griffith's Chief Theatre nearby.

On September 20, 1985, the
Historic El Rancho Hotel is
added to the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties.
Two years later on November
30, 1987, the Historic El Rancho
Hotel was registered in the
U.S. Register of Historic Places.
Two months later the El Rancho
hotel was officially added to the
U.S. Register of Historic Places.
In 1940 Auro Cattaneo was
contracted by Father Gerard Geier of
Saint Teresa Catholic church for
the construction of a community
center built entirely out of stone
on land donated by Carroll
Gunderson of the Bond-
Gunderson Co.
Auro being known for his
masonry work, helped Father
Gerard to locate the perfect
stone for the construction of the
center, the stone was found in
the Zuni Mountains located 5 miles SW of
Grants.

The construction of the
Community Center, close to
completion would continue into
1951.
In 2022, the Saint Teresa
Community Center was listed
on the U.S. Register of Historic
Places.

In 1941, Auro Cattaneo would be
called upon once again by R. E. Griffith,
owner of the Hotel El-Rancho in Gallup.
Griffith thought about opening a
location in Deming, New Mexico, but saw
an opportunity in Las Vegas while
on the way to pick up materials in
California.
Griffith purchased property one
mile north of the New El Rancho
Hotel. Included in the offer was
Las Vegas first nightclub on
Highway 91, the former Pair 'O
Dice Casino & Dance Club, owned by Frank
Detra (1931-1939), Club 91, Guy MacAfee
(1939-1941) and was renamed Leo Carrillo
Bar.

It was then incorporated into the
new hotel built by Griffith in Las
Vegas and was designed by his
nephew William J. Moore.
William worked alongside
with Auro and other Masons
form New Mexico on what would
become the Hotel Last Frontier
which opened October 30, 1945
The hotel became the second
hotel and casino located on the
Las Vegas Strip. The hotel went
through several owners and
renamed the last as the New
Frontier, Phil Ruffin (1998-2007)
and was demolished in 2007.

During 1942, Auro married
his wife Nellie in Houck, Arizona.

In late 1946 Auro Cattaneo's
masonry took him back out of
state to do the brick and
stonework for the Thunderbird
Hotel built by Cliff Jones
and Marion Hicks (owner, El
Cortez) opened on September 2,
1948, located in Winchester,
Nevada.
The Thunderbird Hotel (1948-
1977) was the fourth hotel and
casino built on the Las Vegas
Strip.
The hotel over the years has
gone through many name
changes, the last as El Rancho
Hotel & Casino (1982-1992).
The Hotel was demolished
in 2000. The property today is
now home to the Fontainebleau
Las Vegas due to open 2023.

In 1949, Auro would be busy while
working on the Community
Center, he was also in the
process of building a new motel
located six blocks east.
The new motel soon to be
known as the Franciscan Lodge
was designed and built by Auro,
to be located at 1101 E. Santa Fe
Avenue on U.S. Route 66 in
Grants, New Mexico.
The Franciscan Lodge
opened in September 1950.

In 1955 Auro Cattaneo began
construction on a new motel to be
located 8 miles west of Grants at
Bluewater, New Mexico on U.S.
Highway 66, across from the
Anaconda Miners Housing
Community.
The motel goes on to have 22
new ultra-modern units, phones
and TV, Pool, Room and Patio
Service, Playground, and a
Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge.
The motel was named Auro's Bluewater Inn Resort Lodge opened in 1956.
In 1957, the sign blade built by Zeon Signs from Albuquerque, New Mexico was installed in the east side of the property by the pool,
renamed the Bluewater Motel and Bluewater Inn & Cocktail Lounge was a member of Best Western Motels. Everett and Etta King of the Franciscan Lodge in Grants become owners of the motel.

Sometime from 1956-1958 Auro
Cattaneo was building a new motel.

Auro Cattaneo and wife Nellie
owners of the newly built Franciscan
Lodge opened in September 1950 with
Etta King as its first official manager.
Auro designed the Franciscan Lodge
as a double L-plan motel with a hipped
front over the office, a brick and stone
top porch entry, brick accents on
lower portion of the exterior walls,
southwestern-style exterior window accents. 32 rooms furnished with the finest in furniture, eight 2-car
heated garages, managers' living quarters with
kitchen, housekeeping, laundry and maintenance room. On each side of the motel are two courtyards.

-

The Franciscan Lodge had two
distinct types of neon signage built
by Zeon Signs of Albuquerque, New
Mexico. The office sign was erected
sometime in 1958, which is a
roof-top mounted sign blade, and is
supported by guy wires, is 9ft wide
and 9ft high, and incorporates a
forest green background with white
painted letter using the classic flat letter style for the lettering with neon tubing for the words that reads "Franciscan" (top) with green neon in cursive at the top of the sign blade followed by "LODGE" (middle) with violet neon in uppercase letters, "NO VACANCY" (bottom) with red neon uppercase letters, and green neon curved under the "NO
VACANCY" letters at the edge of the sign blade on the street side, with "OFFICE" located under with red neon in uppercase letters.
Attached to the streetside of the
sign blade is the oval AAA sign with
a blue painted background with
light blue neon outline, "AAA" with
red neon in uppercase letters, and
"APPROVED" with white neon in
uppercase letters.

The second sign, which is mounted
to four poles located on the top
center of the roof is a 39 ft wide by 30
ft high sign blade shaped like a wood plank with jagged edges on both ends, painted in a wood-grain pattern, also incorporating the classic flat letter style with neon tubing for the lettering, reads "FRANCISCAN LODGE" and fills the length of the sign.
On top is a smaller section that reads "YOUR HOME ON THE ROAD" and on the bottom is another small section that reads "HEATED GARAGES" all containing white lettering, as for the colors of the neon are
undetermined at this time.
