FRANCISCAN LODGE
Auro Cattaneo 1913-1975
Nellie Cattaneo 1917-2002
Auro Cattaneo born in Valnegra, Bergamo, Lambardia, Italy to Angelo and Marietta Cattaneo in 1913 immigrated to the U.S. in 1921 at
age five with his family according
to the 1930 census where they
settled in Gallup, New Mexico.

In 1937 Auro was contracted by R.E. Griffith to do stonework and brick-work at the Historic Hotel El-Rancho located in Gallup. At the same time
his future wife Nellie was working
for Griffith's movie theater nearby.
On November 30, 1987, The Hotel
El-Rancho was registered in the
U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

In 1940 Auro Cattaneo was contracted
by Father Gerard Geier of Saint
Teresa Catholic church for the
construction of a community center
built entirely out of stone on land
donated by Carroll Gunderson of
the Bond-Gunderson Co. Auro
being known for his masonry work,
helped Father Gerard to locate the
perfect stone for the construction of the
center, the stone was found in the Zuni
Mountains located 5 miles southwest of
Grants. The construction of the
Community Center, close to completion
would continue into 1951. in the photos to
the left and was completed in 1951. The
Community Center was listed on the U.S.
National Register of Historic Places 2022.

In 1941 Auro Cattaneo would be called upon once again by R.E. Griffith,
owner of the Hotel El-Rancho in
Gallup. Griffith thought about
opening a location in Deming, New
Mexico but saw an opportunity in
Las Vegas while on the way to pick
up materials in California. Griffith purchased property one mile
north of the New El Rancho Hotel. Included
in the offer was Las Vegas first nightclub
on Highway 91, the former Pair 'O Dice
Casino & Dance Club, owned by
Frank Detra (1931-1939), Club 91,
Guy MacAfee (1939-1941) and
was renamed Leo Carrillo Bar.
It was then incorporated into
the new hotel built by Griffith
in Las Vegas and was designed
by his nephew William J. Moore.
William worked alogside with

Auro and other Masons from New Mexico
on what would become the Hotel Last
Frontier which opened October 30, 1942.
The hotel became the second
hotel and casino located on
the Las Vegas Strip. The hotel
went through several owners
and renamed the last as the
New Frontier, Phil Ruffin
(1998-2007) was demolished
in 2007.

During 1942 Auro married his wife Nellie in Houck, Arizona.

In late 1946 Auro Cattaneo's masonry
took him back out of state to do the
brick and stonework for the
Thunderbird Hotel built by Cliff Jones
and Marion Hicks (owner, El Cortez)
opened on September 2, 1948,
located in Winchester, Nevada. The
Thunderbird Hotel (1948-1977) was
the fourth hotel and casino built on
the Las Vegas Strip. The hotel over
the years has gone through many
name changes, the last as El
Rancho Hotel & Casino (1982-
1992). The Hotel was demolished
in 2000. The property today is
now home to the Fontainebleau
Las Vegas due to open 2023.

Sometime in the late 1940's, Auro
would be busy while working on the
Community Center, he was also in
the process of building a new
motel located six blocks east. The
new motel soon to be known as
the Franciscan Lodge was
designed and built by Auro, to
be located at 1101 E. Santa Fe
Avenue on U.S. Route 66 in Grants, New
Mexico. The Franciscan Lodge opened
September 1950.

In 1955 Auro Cattaneo began
construction on a new motel to be
located 8 miles west of Grants at
Bluewater, New Mexico on U.S.
Highway 66, across from the
Anaconda Miners Housing
Community. The motel goes on to
have 22 new ultra-modern units,
phones and TV, Pool, Room and
Patio Service, Playground, and a
Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge. The
motel named Auro's Bluewater Inn Resort
Lodge opened in 1956. In 1957, the sign
blade built by Zeon Signs from
Albuquerque, New Mexico was installed in
the east side of the property by the pool,
renamed the Bluewater Motel and
Bluewater Inn & Cocktail Lounge was a
member of Best Western Motels. Everett
and Etta King of the Franciscan Lodge in
Grants become owners of the motel.

Auro Cattaneo and wife Nellie owners
of the newly built Franciscan Lodge
opened in September 1950 with Etta
King as its first official manager.
Auro Cattaneo designed the
Franciscan Lodge as a double L-plan
motel with a hipped front over the
office, a brick and stone top porch entry, brick accents on lower portion of the
exterior walls, southwestern style exterior
window accents. 32 rooms furnished with
the finest in furniture, eight 2 car heated
garages, managers living quarters with
kitchen, housekeeping, laundry and
maintenance room. On each side of the
motel are two courtyards.
The Franciscan Lodge had two
distinct types of neon signage built
by Zeon Signs of Albuquerque,
New Mexico. The office sign wa
erected sometime in late 1950,
which is a roof top mounted sign
blade and is supported by guy
wires, is 9ft wide and 9ft high and
incorporates a forest green
background with white painted letter
using the classic flat letter style for the
lettering with neon tubing for the words
that reads "Franciscan" (top) with green
neon in cursive at the top of the sign blade
followed by "LODGE" (middle) with violet
neon in uppercase letters, "NO VACANCY"
(bottom) with red neon uppercase letters,
and green neon curved under the "NO
VACANCY" letters at the edge of the sign
blade on the street side with "OFFICE"
located under with red neon in uppercase
letters. Attached to the streetside of the
sign blade is the oval AAA sign with a blue
painted background with light blue neon
outline, "AAA" with red neon in
uppercase letters, and "APPROVED" with
white neon in uppercase letters.

The second sign which is mounted to
four poles located on the top center
of the roof is a 39ft wide by 30 ft
high sign blade shaped as a wood plank
with jagged edges on both ends is painted
in a wood grain fashion also incorporated
the classic flat letter style with neon
tubing for the lettering reads "FRANCISCAN
LODGE" that fills the length of the sign. On
top is a smaller section that reads "YOUR
HOME ON THE ROAD" and on the bottom is
another small section that reads "HEATED
GARAGES" all containing white lettering, as
for the colors of the neon is undetermined
at this time.

Sirloin Stockade is a popular American restaurant franchise famous for its all-you-can-eat family-style buffets. Founded in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1966, Sirloin Stockade operates over 80 locations in the United States and Mexico. The company-owned and franchised restaurants offer an extensive range of food items, including broiled steaks, chicken, fried shrimp, and other popular dishes.
The original Sirloin Stockade restaurant in Oklahoma City was distinguished by a giant 1,800-pound plastic ornamental cow displayed in the vicinity during the 1970s. In keeping with tradition, several other locations also have large ornamental cows on display, mounted atop outdoor signage and trailers. The chain serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, providing guests with various food options at their buffets. Whether you're an early riser looking for a hearty breakfast, someone seeking a light lunch, or a foodie searching for a delicious dinner, Sirloin Stockade has something for everyone.
The company-owned and franchised restaurants usually occupy 8,000 to 9,000 square feet of space and typically employ around 100 to 115 people at each location. As of 2008, the company had 28 company-owned and managed restaurants and 74 franchised locations, and as of June 2016, it operated over 80 restaurants across nine U.S. states and Mexico. While some Sirloin Stockade locations have closed in recent years, several others have been in business for a considerable period.
In December 2014, a Sirloin Stockade location in Galesburg, Illinois, stopped serving steak at its buffet due to rising food and beef prices. However, steak continues to be offered as a menu item. As of May 2019, the store locator lists only 15 locations. However, Sirloin Stockade is a preferred dining destination for families and foodies, thanks to its extensive menu, friendly service, and warm, inviting atmosphere.

In a last-minute scramble to apply and submit a business plan to the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, owners Victor and Paula Briseño originally petitioned for $32,000 in order to restore the historic windows as well, but were only granted enough to cover the door restoration. The Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program had allotted $90,000 in grant money for the state of New Mexico and Grants was the only city awarded a portion of that.
The Briseños purchased the three-acre property from Fidel Duenas in June 2015, and began and completed restoration of the property in October. So far, the Briseños have put a new roof on the building, a project they completed in April. Future plans include restoring the original windows, guest rooms, restaurant, neon lighting and parking lot. The Briseños also applied to register the motel in the New Mexico historic preservation division.
The Briseños plan to set the tone of the “post war era” of the 1950s throughout the entire motel. Once in business, they hope to put on antique car shows, host community events, and even bring in local bands to play live shows. This will be Grants first boutique motel.
The Grants Mainstreet Project helped the Briseños with the cost-share grant application through the program. The Briseños family plans to reopen the former Western Host Motel by summer 2017, built in the 1950's, with the room rate starting at $70. per night.

Grants Fire & Resue and Milan Volunteer Fire Department respond to fire at the His

Grants Fire with assistance from Milan Volunteer Fire Department and Cibola County Fire Command were dispatched to a reported structure fire on E. Santa Fe Ave. Upon arrival crews reported heavy smoke and flames from the East side section of the hotel. San Rafael Volunteer Fire Department was also toned out for water support. Crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to the adjacent two story section of the hotel and the surrounding businesses. Fire units were used to remove trailers being threatened at Sacred Winds property succeeding in saving them from damage. The fire was brought under control and extinguished and at this time is under investigation. 34,000 gallons of water was used in extinguishing the fire. One firefighter was injured.
Thank you to Superior Ambulance, Grants Police Department, NM State Police and Cibola County Sheriff’s Department for keeping the scene safe while crews worked. Councilman Eric Garcia provided much needed Gatorade for crews while rehabilitating.

The Grants Mainstreet Project helped the Briseños with the cost-share grant application through the program. The Briseños family plans to reopen the former Western Host Motel by summer 2017, built in the 1950's, with the room rate starting at $70. per night.
